Finally!

It has been FIVE months since Joshua cut his last tooth! Every once in a while he will act like he's teething by drooling, having a bit of a runny nose or possibly one bout of diarrhea, or even a bit of fussiness and clinginess with me. For a while now he has had a thing with wet wipes. It doesn't matter what kind - baby wipes, Wet Ones, or just a plain wet paper towel. I couldn't understand how in the world he could chew on the baby wipes or Wet Ones because they seriously are not tasty. Now I know. Yesterday I reached in and felt a molar poking through. Of all the teeth he could be cutting he's getting his first molar. He only has six other teeth and doesn't even have all his front teeth nor his eye teeth yet. I tell you, this boy's teeth are coming in such a different order than most kids. At least with a molar coming in maybe he'll start eating tougher foods like hamburger meat before too long.

Things that Make You Go Hmmmm...

One word I wish I had never taught Rebekah is 'vagina'. In the beginnings of potty training I taught her the word, but I wish I had taught her 'private' or something similar. Fortunately, Rebekah has not used the word in public other than in the bathroom at the mall when no one was around, and she only says it at home, but part of me is afraid she is going to blurt it out somewhere that will cause embarrassment.

Lately Joshua has had some diarrhea and a low-grade fever, if you can call it a fever. I'm fairly confident it is due to teething. His temperature has been below 101, and his bowel movements have been mushy to runny. (OK, so if you're not a parent this probably is not what you wanted to know.) Joshua has also had a clear runny nose. Of course, these could be symptoms of a little virus, but Joshua has also had his fingers in his mouth more than normal lately, and it seems like there may be some teeth starting to work their way in, although they have a long way to go before they will cut through. I could see some white under his gums, plus it's been forever since he's cut any teeth, and he only has 6 teeth so far.

So, Joshua has had explosive diapers lately, and I was changing a very explosive one after supper. I had to get Darrin to help me some, and of course, Rebekah knew that something interesting must be happening, so she stands over me while I am cleaning up Joshua on the floor. She looks straight down at him and asks, "Is that Joshua's pbajina?" Darrin and I just give each other "the look". You know that look. It's the look that says, "What are we gonna do?" I told Rebekah no that it was his boy parts. I told her she has girl parts and Joshua has boy parts. Of course, Rebekah went on to talk about boy parts and girl parts, but I was just glad and relieved that she was content with that answer.

My Mother's Day

Fortunately, we were able to spend Mother's Day as a family with my side of the family. Joshua had a low-grade fever over the weekend, but it all appears to have been from teething. Sunday I noticed he got his 4th tooth...finally! He was especially cranky Saturday and even clingy with me on Sunday, so I really believe that tooth is the culprit. He now just needs the middle top teeth to fill in the large gap in front.

Darrin and I also each made a trip to the urgent care on Saturday to determine that we both have sinus infections. Now that we are on antibiotics we are recovering, although Darrin seems to be a day behind me going through the illness and recovering. He felt pretty crummy on Sunday, and I wasn't a whole lot better, but we made the best of Mother's Day and enjoyed our time with my parents and my sister and her family. I am just so thankful that I got to spend the day with everyone because I thought I might miss out on seeing my sister and her family while they were in town.

The only bad thing about the day was that because we were not feeling great we missed church. Steve Green did a mini-concert during the morning services, and I was disappointed to have to miss it.

And guess what Darrin and the kids got me for Mother's Day?! A Wii!!! The bad thing is that it doesn't work. Darrin is going to have to exchange it as soon as Wal-Mart gets some more, otherwise, he'll have to send it to Nintendo. I wish we could have played it yesterday, but other than that I couldn't have asked for a better day than spending it with my family.

Update on Joshua

With Joshua having an ear infection we decided to skip physical therapy last week. He missed the previous week as well because Amanda had a death in the family. Joshua has not been as progressive lately with his gross motor skills until yesterday. All of a sudden he decided to start pulling up quite a bit on the couch and take a step or two! Now, he has pulled up to a stand only a handful of times, but yesterday he did it with ease, then he tried to cruise, so this is huge.

I think part of the reason why he hasn't made as much effort lately is because he has just not felt like it. He's been a lot more cuddly lately. I took him to the pediatrician yesterday to see if his ear infection had cleared up. The antibiotic he has been on has given him a red bottom from diarrhea, and he was pulling on both ears and crying out of the blue Sunday evening. Come to find out the ear pain is not even an ear infection. It has cleared up completely. The pain is all teething. So that is why he was waking every 3 hours Saturday night! Well, don't you know, he's got a new tooth today! Not only is it a new tooth, but it's a fang! His teeth are coming in a weird order. Normally the front two teeth come in before the eye teeth. He has two front bottom teeth, but no top teeth, and an eye tooth on top has just started to cut today. The eye tooth on the other side is not far behind. I guess I'll have a cute little Dracula on my hands.

Poor little Joshua has been teething like crazy lately. It's been so bad that it occasionally affects his sleep, especially at night. Yesterday I could feel the corner of a 2nd tooth popping through, and the entire top of the tooth finally cut through. Yippee! I think we may get a little break from teething for a while, but we'll see.
